Brian Donnelly is the American designer and artist known for being the Kaws artist and the namesake of his most famous and iconic figurines. The figures and sculptural pieces are displayed in museums, stores, and available at auction both online, in art houses, and where quality collectibles are sold. He has collaborated with big brands including Disney, Medicom and Uniqlo alongside reworking recognisable TV and animation characters including The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man, the Smurfs, and SpongeBob SquarePants.
Kaws toys have been a hit with collectors since their release in the late 1990s for many reasons, including the artists' renown in New York City as a graffiti artist that crossed into mainstream success with sculptures, prints, and collaborative works. In his sculptural creations, a more famous piece is the greyscale Micky Mouse with head down in his hands.
Kaws figures carry on this artistic aesthetic, with a particular point of view and signature style that is easily recognisable to fans and collectors. The line is currently produced by Japanese toy company Medicom, who create many other artistic toy lines, particularly in the Urban Vinyl Art Toy ranges. This craze and art movement has spread worldwide and amassed an eclectic and diverse following.
